The Met Gala is a charity event that raises funds for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This grand event has been organized and chaired since 1995 by Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief of Vogue. For 2022, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Regina King, and Lin-Manuel Miranda were co-chairs. All the celebrities and fashion icons showed their personalized version of the “Gilded Glamour” theme.

Theme and Dress Code

This edition celebrates the second part of the Costume Institute’s two-part exhibition around the theme “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”. The first part: “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” took place on September 18th. Striking looks of Billie Eilish, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian marked this event.

“Gilded Age” is a nod to New York’s golden age. It ran from 1870 – to 1890 and refers to the period of prosperity, industrialization, and growth in America. So lace, fringe, bows, ruffle, and corset-inspired designs were out in force on the red carpet  –  excess was the watchword.

“Dust off Edith Wharton’s ‘Age of Innocence’ and ‘The House of Mirth,'” says Vogue. “The 2022 Met Gala will ask its attendees to embody the grandeur – and perhaps the dichotomy of Gilded Age New York.

Make way for the vestige of the Gilded Age: here’s our selection of unforgettable looks.

Gowns

No red carpet is complete without stunning dresses. Sequins and feathers reigned supreme for this edition. Alicia Keys in Ralph Lauren and Blake Lively in Versace paid tribute to the starry sky of New York and its buildings. Kim Kardashian solidified her status as a glamour icon, dazzling in Marilyn Munroe’s famous ‘birthday’ dress, designed by Jean-Louis.

Met Gala queen, Rihanna, was not IRL for the red carpet. But Vogue unveiled her digital version on Instagram. The artist was immortalized as a VFX statue striking the same pose as the magazine’s May 2022 cover.
